Many Democrats, perhaps most, favor abolishing the Electoral College. Their argument is straightforward and powerful: The presidential candidate who gets the most votes should win. The counterargument is harder to explain but, to my mind, more persuasive: The Electoral College forces presidential candidates to campaign in all parts of the country and appeal to a broader coalition of voters.
